Science on Saturdays

The Secret World of Salamanders

Come learn about some of Alabama’s most secretive and interesting animals! Join herpetologist Kayla Wilson, on March 26th, as she educates us on what makes a salamander a salamander, and what makes them so special! This is a fun program for all ages and we’ll have live specimens of some of Alabama’s coolest salamanders!

This is a one-hour, lecture-style program that will provide the opportunity to see and interact with live animals. Admission is $5 ($4 for members); children 3 and under are free. You may purchase tickets in advance or pay at the door. Cancelled in the event of rain.

Family Art Fun Workshop

REGISTER NOW

Saturday, March 19th, 1 to 3 PM.

Come enjoy the outdoors at the KPNC through art! No matter the age you can have fun with art while learning to improve. During this class you will learn about many different watercolor techniques while creating your own masterpiece. We will start with simple techniques and work our way up. We will do an instructed lesson on how to paint a leaf, then you will get the chance to paint whatever inspires you. This will be a great opportunity to have some family fun while enjoying nature and art!

Bird Banding Demonstration

Why do we band birds? What does it tell us about their lives and the environment? How do we catch birds for banding? Come and find out!

Saturday and Sunday, March 12th & 13th, from 8 AM to noon, the Banding Coalition of the Americas will be setting up mist nets at the Kreher Preserve & Nature Center to offer visitors a demonstration on bird banding. Look for the nets at the main pavilion and at the bird viewing area on the powerline.

Astronomy Night

Join us Friday night, March 4th, between 6 and 8 PM at Kiesel Park to gaze through some very powerful telescopes and learn about some of the wonders of the universe.

We welcome the Auburn Astronomical Society who will be brining their experience, knowledge, and a variety of telescopes for you to gaze through. The event will also feature a short astronomy program, educational space movie, and some out-of-this-world snacks.

Remember to bring a flashlight and dress warmly.  Please be aware, this program is not recommended for children under 6.  Admission is $5 ($4 for members) – pay when you arrive.

Read Across the Preserve

Wednesday, March 2, from 3 to 5 PM

Join the KPNC and the Auburn Public Library as we partner to celebrate “National Read Across America Day” with the National Education Center.  National Read Across America Day coincides with Theodor Seuss Geisel’s (Dr. Seuss) birthday and across the country, we celebrate by bringing together kids, teens, and books!  At the KPNC, enjoy stories every 20 minutes at many locations around the Nature Center including the Nature Playground’s tree house, the campfire, the waterfall deck, Azalea Place, and among the trees on our trails.  Visitors will also get to hunt for each page of our “story walk,” a book whose pages are along a short walk in the woods.

Read Across the Preserve is free – donations are welcomed.  Cancelled in the event of rain – please watch our Facebook page for updates.
